How to Replace Your Engine Air Filter: A 5-Minute Job Dealers Charge $40 For

The engine air filter is the most consistently overpriced service at dealerships and quick lube shops, typically charged at $35 to $50 for a part that costs $12 to $20 and takes five to ten minutes to install without any tools in most vehicles. Replacement at the recommended interval — typically every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, or more frequently in dusty driving conditions — maintains engine performance, fuel economy, and long-term engine health. Here is what to know and how to do it in the driveway.

What the Air Filter Does and When to Replace It

The engine air filter prevents dust, debris, pollen, and particulates from entering the engine with the intake air. A clogged air filter restricts airflow to the engine, reducing performance and fuel economy by reducing the air available for combustion. Modern vehicles with mass airflow sensors compensate for reduced airflow by reducing fuel injection to maintain the air-fuel ratio, which manifests as reduced power and throttle response rather than rich running conditions. Inspect the air filter at every oil change and replace it when it is visibly dirty or at the manufacturer’s recommended interval.

Finding and Replacing the Filter

The air filter housing is the large plastic box connected to the engine intake — typically either a rectangular box on older vehicles or a round housing on newer ones, connected to the air intake tube running to the throttle body. Open the housing by releasing the clamps, clips, or screws holding it closed — most housing designs use either spring clips that push inward or wing nuts that unscrew by hand. Lift out the old filter, note the orientation of the filter in the housing, and insert the new filter in the same orientation. Close the housing and verify all clips or fasteners are fully engaged. The entire process takes five minutes in most vehicles.
